During a recent government meeting, Fargo officials discussed the ongoing update to the Fargo Growth Plan, led by Jim Gilmore and the planning department team, including Nicole Crutchfield, Mark Williams, and Kim Kucrowski. The update is crucial as it aims to guide the city's development over the next several years, with the last growth plan established in 2007.
The meeting highlighted the need for a comprehensive review of Fargo's growth strategies, prompted by findings from the 2021 Core Neighborhood Plan and a diagnostic of the land development code. In September 2022, the city commissioned a consultant, CZB, to assist in this update, which included a robust public participation process involving stakeholder interviews, community presentations, and online surveys.
The draft plan is structured into four parts: an analysis of Fargo's historical growth, community input on future development, a framework for decision-making regarding growth, and implementation steps. Key findings indicate that Fargo has experienced significant population and job growth, outpacing state and national averages. The plan anticipates the need for 15,000 additional households over the next 25 years, with a focus on urban development and infill projects.
The framework for future growth emphasizes context-sensitive development, identifying various zones and growth centers to enhance walkability and density. The plan also proposes modifications to economic development incentives to align with the preferred growth scenario.
As the city continues to gather feedback on the draft, officials are optimistic about the potential for a more structured and sustainable approach to Fargo's growth, ensuring that infrastructure and community needs are met effectively over the coming decade.
