Tara Thorman, the administrative assistant to Mayor Shawn Birkin and event coordinator for North Vernon, provided a comprehensive update on the city's animal control efforts during a recent government meeting. Thorman, who also serves on the Jennings County Bridal Control Board, emphasized the urgent need for improved resources and funding for the facility, particularly in light of the community's feedback regarding high adoption fees.
Thorman highlighted that the current adoption fees, which cover essential veterinary services, have been a barrier to finding homes for animals, especially during times of overcrowding that lead to euthanasia. She proposed exploring options to lower these fees and mentioned plans for free adoption events in conjunction with spay and neuter clinics to address the influx of unwanted animals.
The conditions at the animal control facility were described as dire, with Thorman detailing unsanitary environments that contribute to the spread of airborne diseases among the animals. She urged board members to visit the facility to witness the conditions firsthand and to engage in discussions about necessary improvements.
Despite these challenges, Thorman reported a positive trend in adoptions, with a 13% increase in animals adopted in 2024 compared to the previous year. She expressed her commitment to enhancing the facility's operations and fostering community involvement, including a proposal to waive up to $10,000 in adoption fees to facilitate more adoptions.
The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts needed to improve animal welfare in North Vernon, with Thorman calling for community input and support as the board navigates these critical changes.
