Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is set to launch in partnership with the Altoona Public Library, providing children from birth to age five in specific ZIP codes with a free book each month. The program aims to enhance early literacy by mailing age-appropriate books directly to homes, with an initial target of reaching 30% of local children, approximately 611 kids, at a cost of $15,385 for the first year.
The initiative, which costs $2.10 per child for books and mailing, has already secured two sponsors to help fund its launch. The Altoona School District Foundation is acting as the program's 501(c)(3) partner, and additional sponsorships and donations are being sought to ensure its sustainability.
The program emphasizes the importance of early literacy, which is linked to future academic success. It will target families through pediatricians, WIC offices, and other community resources to facilitate sign-ups. A kickoff event is scheduled for September 13, where the first group of participants will be registered, coinciding with a story time session at the library.
Books will be selected based on age, starting with board books for infants and progressing to picture books for older children. The program aims to foster a love for reading from an early age, with the support of local partners playing a crucial role in its success.
