During a recent Oxnard City Council meeting, discussions highlighted community support for local youth sports and ongoing concerns regarding coastal planning amid rising sea levels.
A council member emphasized the importance of supporting local youth, particularly those from families of farm workers, and announced the launch of a GoFundMe page to assist the Oxnard FC Orlando team. This initiative aims to gather community contributions to support the team, which is a blend of school teams from the area.
In a separate discussion, Walter Hagedorn, chair of the Oxnard Shores Neighborhood Council, addressed the long-standing issue of updating the local coastal plan. He noted that the plan, which has been under review for nearly a decade, had not been properly recorded in city documents due to past agreements. Hagedorn expressed concern over a recent memo from the County of Ventura regarding a draft coastal plan that could impose unrealistic restrictions on Oxnard's coastal zones. He highlighted the need for public input before the plan is submitted to the Coastal Commission, urging the city to ensure that local interests are adequately represented.
The meeting underscored the city's commitment to community engagement and the importance of addressing environmental challenges while fostering local sports initiatives.
