During a recent government meeting, representatives from the Cultural Wellness Center presented their plans for a new project, Dreamland on 38th, aimed at revitalizing a historically significant area in South Minneapolis. Atum Azahir, the founder and executive director of the Cultural Wellness Center, emphasized the importance of heritage preservation and community development, drawing on his personal history and the legacy of African American resilience.
Azahir, who will celebrate his 81st birthday in August, spoke passionately about the center's mission to document and elevate the experiences of African Americans, particularly in light of the historical challenges faced by the community. He highlighted the Cultural Wellness Center's role in fostering racial harmony and healing through cultural and economic initiatives.
Anthony Taylor, the Community Development Lead for the center, elaborated on the significance of the 38th Street area, which has been a hub for African American culture since the 1920s. He noted that the proposed 10,000 to 11,000 square foot building will serve as the world headquarters for the Cultural Wellness Center and will include a culinary heritage program, health services, and entrepreneurial support for local businesses.
The project aims to honor the legacy of the Dreamland Cafe, a historic establishment that once served as a cultural and economic center for the community. Taylor underscored the center's commitment to job creation and economic development, stating that the construction phase alone could generate 60 jobs and provide career exploration opportunities for local youth.
The Cultural Wellness Center is seeking approval for the demolition of a historic resource to make way for this new development, which they believe will significantly contribute to the cultural and economic landscape of the area. The meeting concluded with an invitation for questions from the commissioners, as the center's representatives expressed their eagerness to engage with the community and address any concerns regarding the project.
