In a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around the staffing challenges faced by Maplewood Nursing Home, particularly in light of new federal regulations. Catherine Kendup, the nursing home administrator, reported on the ongoing difficulties in recruiting and retaining registered nurses (RNs), a critical requirement for compliance with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Kendup highlighted that the nursing home has struggled to maintain a 24/7 RN presence since losing their night nurse five years ago. The facility is currently unable to meet two key staffing requirements: having an RN on-site at all times and achieving a minimum of 0.55 hours of RN care per resident per day. These regulations will be enforced starting in 2026, prompting urgent action from the administration.
To address these staffing shortages, Kendup proposed a budget increase for 2025 aimed at enhancing recruitment and retention efforts, particularly for RNs. She noted that the nursing home had previously implemented a wage increase for RNs, which helped retain one nurse who had considered leaving for a higher-paying position. However, the facility still faces a competitive market, with RNs being offered significantly higher wages elsewhere.
In addition to increasing RN wages, Kendup suggested investing in the development of current licensed practical nurses (LPNs) by supporting their transition to RNs. This strategy aims to cultivate talent from within the organization, as external recruitment has proven challenging.
The meeting also included a motion to authorize a line of credit through M&T Bank, reinforcing the importance of maintaining existing banking relationships as the nursing home navigates these financial and operational challenges. The commissioners unanimously approved the motion, signaling a collaborative approach to addressing the pressing issues at Maplewood.
As the nursing home prepares for the upcoming regulatory changes, the focus remains on strategic staffing solutions and financial planning to ensure compliance and quality care for residents.
