In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the upcoming opening of a new library facility, highlighting its features and addressing challenges related to electronic book access. The new library, which will span 17,000 square feet, is set to replace the current 3,000 square foot location, allowing for a more extensive collection of books, particularly focusing on children's literature.
Library officials noted a significant shift towards electronic resources, with 30% to 35% of circulation now being digital. However, this transition comes with challenges, as eBooks are considerably more expensive than physical copies. For instance, while a paper book may cost around $17, an electronic version can reach up to $80. This pricing structure, coupled with restrictions on usage, has led to wait times for patrons seeking access to popular titles. Library representatives are actively pursuing legislative efforts to secure fairer pricing from publishers to enhance accessibility.
The meeting also addressed the library's operational hours, which will initially remain the same as the current schedule—10 AM to 7 PM from Monday to Thursday and 10 AM to 5 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Future adjustments to hours may be considered as staff acclimate to the new space.
The new facility will feature various meeting spaces, including a demonstration kitchen and a podcast studio, catering to community needs and enhancing the library's role as a gathering place. Officials expressed optimism that the increased space and resources would attract more visitors, benefiting both the library and the community at large.
