In a recent government meeting, significant changes were announced regarding the local youth support services, particularly the disbandment of the Adolescent Support program, effective December this year. The decision was made by the current program leader, who cited personal medical issues as the driving force behind this difficult choice after over 30 years of service to the community.
Candy Archuleta, a long-time employee of the program, will take over the management of two key initiatives: the truancy program and a new youth empowerment initiative. Archuleta, who has worked in the field for six years, expressed her commitment to continuing the successful aspects of the program while implementing necessary changes to enhance its effectiveness.
During the meeting, Archuleta outlined her proposed budget of $243,920 for the upcoming year, which includes funding for both the truancy program and the new youth empowerment initiative. She emphasized the importance of engaging both students and their parents in the truancy process, which aims to address unexcused absences through a structured, voluntary program. The program consists of three phases, with the goal of helping students improve their attendance and academic performance.
Archuleta also proposed the introduction of Saturday school sessions to provide additional support for students, alongside a requirement for them to attend after-school programs. She highlighted the need for competitive salaries to attract and retain quality staff, suggesting starting salaries around $35,000, with a cap of $40,000, along with health insurance benefits.
The meeting underscored the community's commitment to youth empowerment and the importance of a smooth transition as leadership changes hands. The outgoing leader expressed gratitude for the support received over the years and confidence in Archuleta's ability to carry on the legacy of the program. The discussions reflect a proactive approach to addressing youth challenges in the community, ensuring that support services remain robust and effective.
