The city of Hemet is set to launch a new Commercial Facade Improvement Grant Program aimed at revitalizing local businesses and enhancing the community's aesthetic appeal. During a recent city council meeting, the Economic Development Manager presented the initiative, which is part of a broader strategic plan for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
The program will offer two types of grants—micro and macro—targeting distressed shopping centers and encouraging private investment. The city has allocated a total of $900,000 for the program, which includes $120,000 for small business grants and an additional $330,000 for macro grants. The goal is to stimulate economic growth by improving the shopping and dining experiences for residents and attracting visitors.
Key objectives of the grant program include enhancing the quality of life, fostering public-private partnerships, and preserving Hemet's historical character while modernizing its commercial corridors. The Economic Development Manager emphasized the importance of creating a pedestrian-friendly environment that appeals to both residents and tourists.
The council approved the resolution for the grant program unanimously, with discussions highlighting the need for applicants to be in good standing with zoning and code enforcement regulations. This measure aims to ensure that funds are allocated to businesses that contribute positively to the community.
The initiative is inspired by successful examples from other California cities, where similar programs have led to significant improvements in local business districts. The city hopes that by investing in its commercial areas, it can stop the outflow of residents seeking shopping and dining experiences elsewhere, ultimately fostering a vibrant local economy.
