During a recent government meeting, Broward County Public Schools officials presented the tentative budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, highlighting a decrease in the proposed millage rate and significant allocations for teacher compensation and essential programs.
The proposed millage rate for the upcoming year is set at 6.4655, down from last year's 6.6156, marking a 2.3% reduction. This decrease is attributed to a reduction in the required local effort and the millage levy for voted debt service related to general obligation bonds. The local millage levies are projected to generate approximately $2 billion in total revenue, with nearly $1.2 billion earmarked for district operations, $471 million for construction and capital improvements, and $314 million aimed at recruiting and retaining high-quality teachers.
The budget allocates a total of $3.1 billion for the general fund, with 61% dedicated to compensation, including salaries and benefits. Notably, 92% of the district's operating budget is directed towards school operations, underscoring the district's commitment to educational priorities. The budget also includes a recurring teacher salary increase of $19.6 million, reflecting a 2.26% increase funded through state resources.
In addition to financial allocations, the district received accolades for its financial reporting, including awards from the Association of School Business Officials and the Government Finance Officers Association, recognizing its commitment to transparency and excellence in financial management.
The meeting concluded with a reminder of the budget adoption timeline and an acknowledgment of the finance team's efforts in preparing the budget documents. The district continues to emphasize its dedication to leveraging resources effectively to enhance its financial position and support educational initiatives.
