In a recent Morgantown City Council meeting, several key resolutions and ordinances were discussed and approved, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance city infrastructure and address housing needs.
The council began by approving a resolution authorizing individuals to conduct banking transactions on behalf of the city. Additionally, contracts were authorized with the Monongalia County Board of Education for the provision of prevention resource officers at Suncrest Middle School and a school resource officer at Morgantown High School.
A significant point of discussion arose regarding the approval of electrical installation services for the Metropolitan Theater. The council noted that only one contractor submitted a bid, raising concerns about the lack of competition. Despite this, city officials emphasized that the bid met budgetary requirements and was deemed necessary for the project. After deliberation, the council voted unanimously to proceed with the contractor.
The council also considered zoning reclassifications for various parcels of land. A first reading of an ordinance was approved to change the zoning of a property at 1433 Dorsey Avenue from single-family residential to a service business district. This change was supported by a unanimous recommendation from the planning commission.
Another zoning ordinance was introduced to reclassify approximately nine acres of land along University Avenue from an office and institutional district to a multifamily residential district. This area is expected to accommodate the development of townhomes, aligning with the city’s comprehensive plan.
In a move to address housing affordability, the council approved a resolution directing a study on the availability of affordable housing in Morgantown. This initiative aims to develop recommendations for policies and programs to enhance the supply of affordable housing in the community.
The meeting concluded with a series of unanimous votes, reflecting a collaborative approach among council members to address the city's pressing needs and future development plans.
