In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the acquisition of an all-electric Zamboni for the Jay Lively Activity Center's ice rink, highlighting both operational changes and environmental considerations. Council Member Harris raised critical questions regarding the maintenance and backup plans for the new equipment, emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted ice resurfacing for the community.
Amy Hagen, the assistant parks and recreation director, addressed these concerns, explaining that the current fleet includes a 1996 propane Zamboni as a backup and a 2014 model that is primarily used. With the introduction of the electric Zamboni, the older model will be retired, while the 2014 unit will serve as a backup, ensuring that operations can continue smoothly.
Hagen noted that the electric Zamboni is expected to yield significant cost savings on propane, which has been a considerable expense for the facility. The installation of a dedicated 50 amp circuit and charger reflects the rink's commitment to supporting the new equipment's operational needs.
While the city will not be the first in Arizona to adopt an electric Zamboni, it will join a select group of early adopters, showcasing a progressive step towards sustainability in recreational facilities. The meeting underscored the city's proactive approach to modernizing its equipment while addressing community needs and environmental impacts.
