During a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant upgrades to the main library's infrastructure, specifically focusing on the repair and replacement of elevators and escalators. Interim Director of General Services, Melvin Jamerson, provided an update on the budget and timeline for these essential repairs.
The cost for replacing two escalators is estimated at approximately $977,000, with an expected lead time of eight months for equipment delivery. Jamerson noted that the escalators are nearing the end of their 20 to 25-year lifespan. Additionally, two main elevators in the lobby area will be replaced at a cost of $350,000 each, also with a lead time of six to eight months.
The meeting also addressed the status of public access computers at the Crenshaw branch, which have reportedly been out of service for two years. Officials confirmed that funding is in place and new computers are on the way, aiming to restore access soon.
In a somber moment, the meeting acknowledged a recent tragedy at the Hooks branch library, expressing condolences to the victim's family and emphasizing the need for trauma support for library staff affected by the incident. Council members committed to ensuring that necessary resources are provided to help staff heal during this challenging time.
The meeting concluded with a reminder that while there are physical accessibility challenges, the library continues to meet all required accessibility standards in its programming and offerings.
