During a recent government meeting, officials discussed a proposal to rezone a vacant parcel of land located at Old Orchard from C6 office to I1 light industrial. The parcel, which spans just over three acres, is surrounded by industrially zoned properties to the north and south, aligning with the Land Use and Comprehensive Plans. However, it is adjacent to the residential Starlight Manor subdivision to the west, raising concerns among local residents.
The rezoning proposal is set to be part of a public hearing at the Plan Commission regarding Tax Increment District (TID) 18, which aims to enhance the local tax base through development. The meeting included public commentary, with residents expressing their apprehensions about the potential impact of industrial development on their community.
Sandra Rasch, a resident of Starlight Manor, voiced her concerns, emphasizing the pride and investment her community has in their homes. She highlighted the tranquility and wildlife that the area currently offers, arguing that the ecological and aesthetic value of the land outweighs the financial benefits of rezoning. Rasch urged decision-makers to consider the long-term implications of their choices on the quality of life for residents, referencing past expansions that have already affected the neighborhood.
The public hearing is expected to continue as community members seek to protect their residential environment from encroaching industrialization.
