During a recent board meeting, the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) celebrated the achievements of several student groups, highlighting their dedication and excellence in various fields.
The meeting commenced with an acknowledgment of the student ambassador board members, who play a vital role in representing youth perspectives. The board expressed gratitude for their tenacity and professionalism, emphasizing the importance of their contributions.
The first group recognized was the 5th grade girls' relay team from Davidson Elementary, who have achieved the remarkable feat of being ranked number one in the country for their 4 by 100 relay. The team, consisting of Aliyah Crothers, Maile Williams, Arielle Edwards, and Veronica Washington, has maintained this top position for several weeks, showcasing their talent and hard work. Their coaches and principal were also honored for their support.
Next, the Spain Elementary-Middle School robotics team was celebrated for their first-place victory in the middle school division at the Great Promise and Next Generation Robotics Competition. The team, sponsored by Jeep and Dana Corporation, demonstrated exceptional skills, finishing fourth overall against high school competitors. Students recognized included Eva Cope, Aria Borum, and several others, along with their coach.
Lastly, Bates Academy's debate team was acknowledged for their outstanding performance in the Umoja Debate League, winning all four season debates and securing an all-expense-paid trip to Ghana. The team, coached by Audra Butler and Soria Hall, included students such as Reagan Stinson and Kennedy Barlow, who will now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of debate abroad.
The meeting concluded with a collective round of applause for all the students and coaches, reinforcing the board's message that when students rise, the entire community benefits.
