During a recent SMART board meeting, officials reported a significant increase in ridership for the fiscal year 2024, with 850,000 riders recorded—a 20 to 25 percent rise each month. The board highlighted initiatives aimed at enhancing service, particularly in Larkspur, through the introduction of a connect shuttle. Additionally, the board noted that 13% of riders are bicyclists, and emphasized ongoing promotions to attract more users, including free rides for seniors and youth.
In a separate discussion, the Larkspur City Council addressed the 2023-2024 Marin County grand jury report concerning the safety of underage riders on Class 2 electric bikes (ebikes). Assistant City Manager Shannon O'Hare and Police Chief Mike Norton presented findings indicating a rise in accidents involving ebike operators under the age of 16. The report criticized the lack of uniform regulations across Marin County and noted that the state has largely left ebike regulation to local jurisdictions.
The council agreed with the grand jury's findings and committed to a more thorough examination of the recommendations, which aim to enhance safety measures for youth operating ebikes. The discussions underscored the need for coordinated efforts among local agencies and schools to address the emerging safety concerns associated with ebike use among minors.
