During a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the ongoing construction project at Depot Street, highlighting significant progress and future plans. Todd, a city representative, introduced Kevin Varney from Burwell Construction, who detailed the project's scope, which includes a 25,000 square foot facility featuring retail space on the ground floor and residential units above.

Varney reported that construction is on track, with footers already poured and upcoming concrete and masonry work scheduled for the next few weeks. The project is expected to continue until March of next year, with steel erection commencing shortly. He emphasized that while construction may cause temporary disruptions, it is a necessary part of urban development aimed at revitalizing the downtown area.

The meeting also addressed safety concerns related to pedestrian access during construction. Varney explained that a pedestrian tunnel was considered but deemed impractical due to space constraints. Instead, pedestrians will be directed to cross at nearby intersections to ensure safety. The construction will require the closure of certain sidewalks, and a user agreement is being negotiated to manage the use of public spaces during the project.

In addition to the construction update, city officials discussed outstanding issues from previous projects on Depot Street, including the installation of audible signals at the Main and Depot intersection and the completion of sidewalk enhancements. The landscape architect has been contacted to expedite the mock-up of bar tops in sloped areas of the sidewalk, which has been delayed.

The meeting concluded with a motion to authorize the city manager to enter into agreements regarding the sidewalk and parking spaces affected by the construction, ensuring that the project proceeds smoothly while addressing community concerns. The officials expressed optimism about the positive impact of the Depot Street project on local business and residential growth.
