During a recent government meeting, Councilor Mayette Guerrero introduced Kelly Duncan, CEO of the Colorado Gibbs Foundation, who presented the Jefferson County Affordable Housing Blueprint. This initiative aims to address the pressing housing challenges in Jefferson County, where a significant shortage of affordable housing has been identified.
Duncan highlighted the findings of a commissioned study revealing that Jefferson County lacks sufficient housing inventory to meet the growing demand, particularly for middle-income households earning between 60% and 120% of the area median income. The study also pointed out that misconceptions about affordable housing persist among community members and elected officials, complicating efforts to address the issue.
The blueprint, developed by the Jeffco Housing Advocacy Steering Committee, is structured around three main pillars: fostering public input and participation, supporting policy development across jurisdictions, and identifying collaborative programs and projects. Each pillar includes specific sub-goals aimed at educating the public, engaging employers, and promoting regional collaboration.
Duncan emphasized the importance of community engagement and collaboration among various stakeholders, including local governments, nonprofits, and residents, to ensure the blueprint's success. The committee is seeking endorsements from governing bodies to solidify support for the blueprint before its public release, which is anticipated by the end of September.
The implementation of the blueprint is set to span three years, with the steering committee overseeing progress and adapting strategies as necessary. Duncan concluded by urging community members to become informed about housing needs and potential solutions, reinforcing the collaborative spirit essential for addressing housing affordability in Jefferson County.
