During a recent school board meeting, discussions centered on the urgent need to address teacher compensation in the Sun Prairie School District. A detailed analysis revealed that Sun Prairie ranks near the bottom in teacher salaries compared to neighboring districts, including Madison. This situation has prompted calls for significant investment in teacher pay to remain competitive and attract quality educators.
The administration presented three options for salary adjustments. The first option aims to align Sun Prairie teachers' salaries with the Dane County average, requiring an investment of approximately $25,100 per teacher, which would raise starting salaries to about $50,500. The second option proposes a more modest increase of $3,400 per teacher, bringing starting pay to around $51,400, which would place it slightly above the county average. This option was previously recommended by the administration.
A more ambitious third option emerged from board discussions, with some members expressing a desire for Sun Prairie to offer the highest teacher salaries in the county. Achieving this would necessitate a $7,000 increase per teacher, elevating starting salaries to over $55,000 and positioning average compensation about $4,591 above the Dane County average.
The board is now tasked with considering these options as they seek to enhance teacher compensation and address the growing concerns regarding salary competitiveness in the region.
