The Village of Glencoe is preparing for a significant home rule referendum, scheduled for a vote at the village board meeting on August 15. If approved, the referendum will be placed on the ballot for the upcoming November election. Village officials emphasize the importance of this initiative, stating that it is designed to enhance local governance and ensure that all residents have the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process.
In addition to the home rule discussion, the village is engaged in ongoing negotiations with the county regarding the Glencoe Golf Club, which straddles both village and forest preserve land. The golf club, a joint venture with the county, has been a longstanding asset for both Glencoe and the wider community. Village officials clarified that the club does not serve as a revenue source for Glencoe, as profits are reinvested into maintaining the facility.
A key point of contention in discussions with the county is the proposed construction of a new clubhouse, which is expected to cost approximately $18 million. Village residents previously approved a referendum to fund this project, as the existing clubhouse is over a century old and in disrepair. However, concerns have arisen regarding the lease agreement for the land on which the clubhouse will be built. The village is seeking to extend the lease beyond its current expiration in 2049 to align with the expected lifespan of the new building. Despite these requests, county officials have so far declined to engage in discussions about extending the lease.
Village leaders expressed disappointment over the lack of communication from the county regarding both the lease extension and adjustments to the clubhouse's footprint. As negotiations continue, Glencoe officials remain hopeful for a resolution that acknowledges the village's significant financial commitment to this joint asset. The outcome of these discussions will be closely monitored by residents and stakeholders alike.
