In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the allocation of a housing planning assistant grant aimed at updating the Arlington Zoning Ordinance. This initiative is designed to ensure compliance with new state statutes and to explore amendments that could reduce barriers to housing production, enhance affordability, and expand housing choices within the city.
The 2023 city council has specifically sought this grant to consider the introduction of middle housing options suitable for Arlington. Middle housing encompasses various types of residential structures, including accessory dwelling units, duplexes, triplexes, quadplexes, cottage clusters, and townhouses. These housing forms are intended to be integrated into the existing urban fabric, promoting a cohesive community feel.
Importantly, Arlington is not mandated to adopt the state's middle housing provisions without consideration. This flexibility allows the technical assistance committee to customize measures that best fit the city's unique needs. The committee is being asked to commit to this initiative for approximately six months, extending through the end of 2024, to facilitate the development of these housing strategies.
