On May 30, 2024, the city issued notices to 12,792 property owners regarding proposed rate increases. These notices outlined the reasons for the increase and provided an opportunity for residents to submit written protests prior to a scheduled public hearing. As of the start of the hearing, only five protests had been received.
The protest period will remain open until the conclusion of the public hearing. For the proposed rate increase to be blocked, a majority protest of 6,397 submissions is required. City staff has recommended that the council conduct the public hearing, consider all public testimony, and determine whether a majority protest exists by the end of the session. If no majority protest is found, staff will recommend the adoption of resolutions and a grammar amendment to approve the new rates for the fiscal year 2024-2025.
