In a recent government meeting, officials discussed two significant developments: a proposed retail center and the final site plan for the DDH Campground on JW Rodis Road.
The proposed retail center, described as a strip mall with a concrete parking area, aims to connect with existing parking facilities. A drainage impact study has been completed, ensuring that stormwater will be managed through an internal drainage system before being released into Highway 22. The commission unanimously approved the final site plan for this project, indicating that all necessary construction plans, including utilities and erosion control, have been addressed.
The DDH Campground, which will feature 18 cabins and four RV sites, also passed its final site plan phase. The campground is designed to serve as a temporary stop for travelers along the I-12 and I-10 corridors, with amenities such as a pond for stormwater management and recreational activities. However, concerns were raised by commission members regarding the potential for long-term residency, with some questioning whether the campground could inadvertently become a trailer park. The owner assured the commission that permanent residency would not be allowed, and each cabin will undergo inspections similar to residential buildings.
Despite the assurances, several commission members expressed skepticism about the campground's appeal, noting the lack of significant attractions in the area. They highlighted the need for regulations to prevent misuse of the campground as a long-term living space, referencing existing issues with nearby campgrounds. The discussion underscored the importance of monitoring developments to ensure compliance with zoning laws and community standards.
