In a recent government meeting, officials addressed a severely dilapidated property that has been a public nuisance and health hazard since its initial inspection in July 2022. The property, which has been plagued by inadequate sanitation, structural hazards, and hazardous electrical and plumbing issues, was condemned after the tenants were evicted.
Despite the property's change in ownership in December 2022, little progress has been made to rectify the dangerous conditions. The new owner, Harris Investment Property LLC, was informed of the property's status and was expected to submit a plan of action. However, as of April 2024, no such plan had been received, prompting the board to issue a series of notices regarding upcoming hearings.
During the meeting, staff recommended declaring the property a public nuisance and hazard, stating that repairs would be unreasonable. The board unanimously agreed, ordering the owner to either demolish the structure or appeal the decision to district court within 30 days. If no action is taken, the city may proceed with demolition.
The board's decision underscores the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities in managing properties that pose risks to public health and safety, highlighting the need for timely action from property owners to address violations.
