Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year, equating to 18 days for a typical 180-day school year. The discussion highlighted that this metric does not differentiate between excused and unexcused absences, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to understanding the reasons behind student absences.

Officials noted that while some students may appear to maintain their grades by completing assignments, this does not substitute for the essential learning experiences gained from daily classroom instruction. To combat this issue, the district has implemented various strategies, including communication with parents through letters and meetings, as well as collaboration with counselors and student support teams to identify barriers to attendance.

At the high school level, initiatives such as good standing programs and attendance incentives have been introduced to encourage students to attend school regularly. The district is also exploring additional measures to address chronic absenteeism, which had reached a rate of 16% prior to the pandemic.
