In a recent government meeting, emergency management officials reported a concerning rise in fire incidents across the county. The July report highlighted a total of 69 fire calls, including four structure fires and an alarming 38 wildfires that have burned approximately 67 acres. This trend mirrors a broader state issue, with 754 fires reported statewide, resulting in the loss of 11,922 acres.
In response to the escalating fire risk, Stark County fire chiefs have recommended updated burn restrictions. Effective immediately, all open pit burning and controlled burns are prohibited. This decision aims to protect first responders, community members, and property from potential fire hazards, particularly following a period of high temperatures that have exacerbated dry conditions.
Officials noted that while the year began with favorable weather, recent heat waves have significantly dried out the region, placing it on the brink of drought. The community is urged to remain vigilant as fire risks continue to rise.
