In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around a significant redevelopment project in Detroit, specifically the transformation of the Higginbotham School into a mixed-use residential complex. The project aims to address the pressing need for affordable housing in the area, with plans to convert the historic school building into 40 apartment units and construct two additional buildings, each containing 30 units. This initiative will provide a total of 100 new housing units, targeting families with incomes at 38% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Rock Hardman, representing the development team, emphasized the importance of revitalizing abandoned structures like the Higginbotham School, which has a notable impact on the surrounding neighborhood. The project, estimated at $36 million, will not only focus on housing but also incorporate community spaces, including a community room in the former auditorium, designed for local gatherings and events.
The development will feature a mix of studio and two-bedroom apartments, alongside outdoor amenities such as playgrounds and tot lots. Additionally, the project will include a fitness center and electric vehicle charging stations, enhancing the living experience for residents and promoting sustainability.
The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts made with the community to ensure the project meets local needs, aiming to breathe new life into the area while preserving the historical aspects of the school building. The redevelopment is seen as a model for future projects, showcasing how adaptive reuse can benefit both residents and the broader community.
