Community rallies for affordable housing and historic preservation

During a recent government meeting, community members voiced their opinions on proposed changes to zoning and development plans in Lanai, emphasizing the need for affordable housing and preservation of local history.

One resident, who has lived on the island his entire life, expressed strong support for reducing resort residential areas, arguing that many locals cannot afford such housing. He highlighted the importance of increasing affordable housing options and noted that the success of the Ko'ele project could provide more jobs, which are crucial for the local economy.

Another testifier, Johan Law, discussed the importance of streamlining the permitting process through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He suggested that requiring applicants to submit GIS data could expedite zoning changes and improve planning efficiency. Law also raised concerns about a proposed bypass road, describing it as poor planning that could hinder future development and pose public safety risks.

Diane Presa, a lifelong resident, echoed support for the changes at Ko'ele, particularly the reduction of resort residential areas and the increase in open space. However, she expressed concern over the fate of two historic homes associated with the ranching community, urging that their significance not be overlooked in future developments. Presa emphasized the importance of remembering the island's history and suggested that these homes could be integrated into wellness initiatives as a way to honor the past.
