Lake County boosts correctional officer pay to tackle staffing crisis
In a significant move to address staffing challenges within its correctional facilities, Lake County has finalized a three-year agreement retroactively effective from December 1, 2023, impacting 133 employees, including four jail receptionists. The agreement comes amid a broader recruitment and retention crisis affecting law enforcement agencies nationwide, with Lake County facing unique challenges as the only direct supervision model jail in Illinois.

The new contract outlines substantial wage increases aimed at enhancing staff retention and attracting new recruits. Effective immediately, correctional officers will see a 6% salary increase, supplemented by an additional 4% designated for recruitment and retention. Subsequent raises are scheduled for December 1, 2024, and December 1, 2025, with increases of 3.5% and special retention bonuses of 2.5% and 1.5%, respectively. Jail receptionists will receive slightly lower increases of 4%, 3%, and 3% over the same period.

These adjustments are expected to elevate the starting salary for correctional officers from the fourth highest among surveyed comparables to the top tier within the region. After the initial increase, the highest salaries will only trail behind DuPage County.

In addition to wage increases, the agreement introduces a longevity bonus structure for existing employees, offering bonuses ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 at various employment milestones, extending up to 30 years of service. This initiative aims to recognize and reward the dedication of correctional officers in maintaining safety within the facility.

To further combat recruitment challenges, the county plans to implement a temporary new hire bonus for recruits joining between December 1, 2023, and June 30, 2025. This bonus will be administered outside the collective bargaining agreement through a memorandum of understanding.

The agreement reflects Lake County's commitment to addressing staffing shortages and enhancing the working conditions for its correctional staff, ensuring the safety and efficiency of its operations.
