During a recent government meeting, Chief John Selberg presented a comprehensive proposal for a new Fire Department Pay Plan and Career Development Plan aimed at addressing recruitment challenges and personnel turnover within the department. The plan is particularly timely as the department prepares to launch a new ambulance service and complete the construction of Firehouse Number 6.
The proposed pay structure introduces multiple levels for various positions: five for qualified firefighters, three for drivers, and three for lieutenants. Additionally, it includes provisions for recruits who have not yet obtained their firefighter certification or EMS licensure. This tiered approach is designed to enhance competitiveness in attracting candidates and to provide clear pathways for career advancement within the department.
To facilitate the transition, the plan allows for a grace period until July 2026 for the implementation of new requirements that firefighters must meet to progress in their careers. The pay plan is set to take effect immediately, with adjustments made as employees reach their eligibility dates for advancement. The budget for 2024 allocates $459,005 to fund this initiative, which aims to ensure fair compensation and support the professional growth of fire department personnel.
Chief Selberg emphasized that the new pay levels would replace the current range-based compensation system with defined minimum pay levels, thereby providing clarity and motivation for employees. The proposal also includes a lateral transition option for hiring candidates with prior firefighting and EMS experience.
The board is expected to review and discuss the proposed motion outlined in the board report, with Chief Selberg available to address any questions from members. This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening the fire department's workforce and enhancing service delivery to the community.
