In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed the upcoming budget for the fiscal year, highlighting significant growth and strategic priorities for the city of DeLand. The proposed budget totals $131 million, reflecting ongoing investments in infrastructure, public safety, and community amenities.
Mayor Clabman opened the meeting by acknowledging the culmination of months of planning and collaboration among various departments. Despite being unable to attend in person due to illness, City Manager Michael provided an overview of the budget process and the strategic plan updates that have shaped this year's priorities.
Key highlights from the meeting included a recommendation to upgrade the tennis and pickleball courts at Earl Brown Park, reallocating funds from a planned park in the southeast to expedite this project. Additionally, the budget includes substantial investments in airport projects and road resurfacing efforts, which are part of a long-term strategy to enhance city infrastructure.
The meeting also noted a remarkable 15% increase in gross taxable property values in DeLand, alongside record new construction valued at $174 million. This growth is expected to bolster projected revenues, particularly from utility services, as new customers continue to emerge from ongoing developments.
However, officials expressed caution regarding state revenues, which showed slight growth in shared revenue but a decline in anticipated sales tax income. The budget reflects a focus on adding capacity within city departments, with $300,000 allocated for hiring staff to update land development regulations—a long-standing goal of the commission.
As the city prepares for the finalization of the budget, officials emphasized the importance of thorough discussions to ensure all community needs are addressed without rushing the process. The next steps will involve further evaluations and potential adjustments as the week progresses.
