Fairgrounds security costs soar amid rising event attendance

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the rising costs of security at the fairgrounds, highlighting a significant increase from $51,177 in 2021 to $68,000 in 2022. The commission clarified that the current charge for security services is a flat rate of $50 per day, a change from a previous model that charged $50 per person. This adjustment was made to streamline administrative costs associated with event security. In 2023, the total expenditure for field staff reached $64,500, while office staff costs amounted to $9,135, bringing the overall security-related expenses to approximately $73,600.

Concerns raised by a citizen regarding security measures at the fairgrounds were addressed, particularly the policy on carrying firearms. Officials noted that the fairgrounds are private property, and the management has the authority to set rules regarding weapons. The sheriff reassured the public that a comprehensive safety plan is in place, with ample law enforcement presence during events, which aims to ensure safety without infringing on Second Amendment rights.
