Seniors demand action against soaring transportation fare hikes

During a recent Fulton County Board of Commissioners meeting, several community members voiced their concerns regarding rising costs and the impact on vulnerable populations, particularly seniors and the homeless.

Maggie McCollum, a senior citizen, addressed the board about the significant fare increase for share rides, which she described as a burden for those on fixed incomes. Another speaker, who identified himself as a victim of the Fulton County criminal justice system, called for legislative changes to prevent delays in notifying defendants about charges. He recounted personal experiences of being charged with misdemeanors and felonies without proper notification, which he argued has severely impacted his life.

In a more positive note, community members recognized the efforts of local police officers who demonstrated compassion during a recent incident involving homeless youth. Speakers praised Officers Allen and I. Benez for their actions in Grove Park, highlighting the importance of community engagement and support from law enforcement.

Concerns about government spending and taxation were also prevalent. Several speakers advocated for a full rollback of the millage rate to alleviate financial pressure on residents, particularly those on fixed incomes. They expressed frustration over perceived government inefficiencies and the need for accountability in spending.

Reverend Siegfried Darcelle White raised issues regarding homelessness, urging the board to take action to protect vulnerable individuals living on the streets, especially during harsh weather conditions. He also criticized the film industry for displacing homeless individuals during productions.
