During a recent city council meeting, community members voiced their concerns regarding proposed rezoning efforts, infrastructure improvements, and ongoing issues with code enforcement.

One resident expressed strong opposition to the rezoning of Redwood Drive from commercial to residential use, emphasizing the need for balanced development. They questioned where future commercial spaces would be located if existing ones were converted to housing, urging the city to prioritize community-building over simply increasing housing stock. The speaker also highlighted the importance of adhering to previously established development plans for the Highbury neighborhood, which aims to enhance the area’s appeal.

In addition to zoning concerns, the resident commended the city for recent street lighting repairs along Lake Park Boulevard, a long-standing issue in the community. They also requested the completion of a crucial sidewalk that connects Monticello School to Lake Park Boulevard, citing safety hazards for students and pedestrians.

Another speaker raised issues related to code enforcement, noting that some reported violations have remained unresolved for over two years. They called for better communication and follow-up on enforcement cases, as well as the need for a fully staffed code enforcement board to address ongoing concerns.

Additionally, a resident brought attention to the invasive Scotch thistle plants proliferating in the Highbury neighborhood, urging the city to take action against these noxious weeds that pose hazards to public spaces.
