During a recent city council meeting, concerns were raised regarding a large, aging maple tree located on an easement at 2135 5th Avenue. Resident Chuck Beckman described the tree, estimated to be around 120 years old, as a significant hazard due to its deteriorating condition. Beckman reported that a quarter of the tree had already fallen into the street, posing risks to pedestrians, especially children using the nearby sidewalk.
Beckman has made numerous attempts to maintain the tree since moving to the property in 2004, including treatments and cabling, but he stated that these efforts have been insufficient. He expressed urgency in having the city remove the tree, citing recent storms that caused branches to fall and the tree's overall poor health, including a large hollow section.
Council members discussed the city's policy regarding tree maintenance in easements, with some uncertainty about the current regulations. It was noted that the city typically only intervenes when a tree is dead, diseased, or dying. The director of parks confirmed that the city had not assessed the tree in two years but would add it to their list for evaluation.
The council's response indicates a willingness to address the issue, with plans to inspect the tree and determine the appropriate course of action. Beckman remains hopeful for a resolution that prioritizes public safety.
