Vice Mayor Tim Lonergan, along with other commissioners, unanimously supported the motion to recognize the month, emphasizing the importance of dignity and equality for LGBTQ+ individuals. The city has a history of advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, being one of the first in Florida to offer domestic partner benefits and achieving a perfect score on the 2023 Human Rights Municipal Equality Index.
The proclamation also announced a community event, Oakland Park Wonderland Bridal, scheduled for June 7, 2024, featuring live entertainment, food trucks, and interactive activities aimed at celebrating diversity and inclusion.
Robert Bu, CEO of the Pride Center in Wilton Manors, accepted the proclamation, expressing gratitude for the city's recognition and support. He reflected on the progress made over the past decades and the importance of providing a safe space for the community.
