The Bexar County Commissioner's Court officially proclaimed October 8 through October 12, 2024, as Peanut Festival Days in Forestville, Texas, recognizing the city's status as the official peanut capital of the state. This announcement was made during a recent meeting, where the court celebrated the 80th annual Peanut Festival, a tradition that dates back to its inception in 1938.
The festival, originally named the Floresville Peanut Festival, began as a community effort to support local farmers and their peanut harvest. The proclamation highlighted the festival's rich history, including the naming of Elizabeth Sheehy as queen in honor of her father, Joe Shealy, who was recognized as the peanut king of Southwest Texas.
The upcoming festival will feature a variety of events, starting with a carnival and a kiddie parade, followed by performances by local bands and a street dance in downtown Floresville. The festivities will culminate on October 12 with the Grand Parade and a day filled with family-friendly activities around the courthouse square, concluding with a concert.
Betty Frazier, president of the Floresville Peanut Festival Association, expressed gratitude to the commissioner's court for their support and extended an invitation to all of Bexar County to join in the celebrations during this milestone event.
