In a recent government meeting, notable achievements in local athletics and education were highlighted, showcasing the accomplishments of students and educators in Cumberland County. Ne'Dayah Hobson, a sophomore, was recognized as the 2024 VHSL Class 1B Track and Field Female Athlete of the Year, marking a significant milestone in her athletic career. Her teammate, Neveah Hopson, also excelled, securing multiple top placements in state competitions, including 2nd place in the triple jump and 3rd place finishes in both the 100 and 200 meters.
The meeting also acknowledged the contributions of students from Cumberland Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, who participated in end-of-year events, including the Cumberland Middle School DARE program in collaboration with the local sheriff's department. Additionally, Levi Dayton received a scholarship from the Junior Achievement of Central Virginia and delivered a speech at the annual Hall of Fame banquet at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
The meeting concluded with a heartfelt tribute to retiring educators Sandra Raymond and Jenny Gills, who have dedicated 34 and 16 years, respectively, to Cumberland County Public Schools. Their service and commitment to education were celebrated as they prepare to retire at the end of June. The community expressed gratitude for their contributions and ongoing support for local schools.
