During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the findings of a hazmat review concerning asbestos-containing materials at a terminal inventory site. The review revealed the presence of asbestos in two doorway threshold locations, prompting a commitment to ensure safety during any future work in the area.
The meeting highlighted concerns regarding spray-on fireproofing materials, which may contain naturally occurring asbestos from Libby, Montana. Although these materials have not been tested, they are being treated with caution. Officials emphasized the importance of encapsulating or properly removing any materials that could disturb asbestos during construction activities.
Staff members have already been informed about the findings, and tenants will be updated in an upcoming meeting. The project manager, in collaboration with a SMAC consultant, will determine the appropriate measures to take if asbestos is encountered during work. The current project scope does not include the removal of all asbestos but focuses on managing it safely if it is disturbed.
Participants in the meeting also discussed the possibility of conducting further testing to confirm the presence of asbestos in the materials. The conversation underscored the need for vigilance and proactive measures to ensure public safety in light of these findings.
