During a recent city council meeting, officials discussed a memorandum of understanding with local artist Nathan Pratt for the development of the \"Beacon of Vision,\" a monument intended to honor aviator Wiley Post. The proposed site for the monument is on city-owned property near Route 66 at Bolch Road, a location identified as part of the Arcadia Lake master plan.
City staff highlighted Pratt's vision and dedication to the project, which aims to enhance tourism and public art in the area. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has already recommended moving forward with the project, which will be funded entirely through private donations, with the city only providing the land and future maintenance responsibilities.
Pratt presented detailed renderings of the monument, which will occupy approximately two acres and include landscaping, ADA-compliant pathways, and parking for visitors. He emphasized the monument's role in promoting economic development and preserving history, particularly in light of the upcoming international events expected to draw visitors to the region.
Council members expressed strong support for the project, noting its potential to attract tourists and enhance the city's cultural landscape. The council unanimously approved the memorandum of understanding, allowing Pratt to proceed with the next steps in the monument's development. The project is seen as a significant addition to the Midpoint Corridor initiative, which aims to beautify and promote the historic Route 66.
