The City Council of Plantation, Florida, has adopted its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) annual action plan for the fiscal year 2024-2025, which is a crucial step in securing federal funding aimed at supporting low and moderate-income residents. The city anticipates receiving $578,477 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which is part of a broader allocation that includes an additional $180,188 for home assistance administered by the Broward County Consortium, bringing the total estimated federal funding to $758,665.
During the meeting, Edwin Griffith, the city’s Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Director, outlined the objectives of the CDBG program, which is designed to foster viable communities through decent housing, suitable living environments, and expanded economic opportunities. The funding is mandated to be allocated as follows: 65% for housing activities, 20% for administration, and 15% for public services.
The proposed action plan includes funding for various public service initiatives, with $20,000 earmarked for organizations such as Women in Distress, Arc Broward, Meals on Wheels, and Lighthouse of Broward. Additionally, the plan allocates $222,782 for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation and $160,000 for down payment assistance.
Councilmember Andrea commended the efforts of the staff in managing the CDBG funds and suggested enhancing the city’s social media presence to better inform residents about available services, particularly regarding the down payment assistance program. This feedback highlights a community desire for increased awareness of resources that can aid residents in need.
The CDBG program is part of a five-year consolidated plan, and this year marks the final year of the current cycle, prompting the city to prepare for a new plan submission next year. The council's approval of the action plan is a significant move towards addressing the needs of the community and ensuring that essential services continue to be funded.
