In August 2023, the Rockford Cares network was launched, aimed at providing essential support to local residents through various service modes, including information referral, direct assistance, and financial education. The program, still in its early stages, has already begun to show promising results, with an increase in the number of individuals served since its inception.
The Rockford Cares initiative focuses on assisting families within the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population, offering direct financial aid through the ALICE Assistance Fund. This fund has been bolstered by grants from the city, county, and local organizations, totaling $35,000 in its first year. Notably, $10,000 came from the city, which was utilized to support 902 household members, with 57% of assistance directed towards city residents.
Transportation costs emerged as the largest expenditure for the program, highlighting a critical need among residents. The network collaborates with other local agencies, such as Way2Go, to ensure comprehensive support for clients, particularly those facing challenges related to employment and transportation.
Financial education services are also a key component of Rockford Cares, providing clients with personalized budgeting assistance and debt management strategies. The program aims to empower individuals to achieve financial stability, recognizing that many face systemic barriers that hinder their economic well-being.
The city is exploring further opportunities to enhance financial empowerment services, potentially participating in a national initiative aimed at improving residents' financial literacy and stability. This aligns with broader economic development goals, emphasizing the importance of financial health in fostering community resilience.
As the Rockford Cares network continues to evolve, its impact on the local community is becoming increasingly evident, with a commitment to addressing the diverse needs of residents and fostering partnerships that enhance service delivery.
