Muskegon is set to unveil a vibrant new mural this Saturday, marking a significant addition to the city's public art landscape. The project, part of the Muskegon City Public Art Initiative, has been in the works since November and is expected to be one of the quickest installations completed by the initiative.
The mural will be created by the Wall Dogs, a group known for their vintage billboard-style artistry, which has roots dating back to 1993. This team previously contributed to Muskegon's artistic scene with two industrial murals in 2013. The upcoming mural will highlight local stories and notable figures, with input gathered from community enthusiasts during a meeting in March.
In addition to the mural, local artist Dan Parker is working on a series of 13 portraits of Muskegon notables, designed to resemble baseball cards, which will be displayed in a nearby park. This initiative coincides with the summer season of the Muskegon Clippers, a collegiate baseball team that plays an ambitious schedule of 36 games over six weeks.
The mural dedication is scheduled for 6 PM on Saturday, coinciding with the Wall Dogs' arrival for installation. Community members, including families of those represented in the mural, are encouraged to attend the unveiling.
Looking ahead, the Muskegon City Public Art Initiative is also planning additional projects, including a sculpture installation along Shoreline Drive set for August and a commissioned sculpture for the Muskegon Museum of Art, inspired by the iconic painting \"Tornado\" by John Stewart Curry. Since 2018, the initiative has raised approximately $1.4 million, with 85% of the funding coming from private donors.
