During a recent government meeting, the athletic director highlighted a remarkable year for Midway ISD sports, celebrating 15 district championships across various teams. This achievement marks a significant milestone, with the director noting that such success has not been seen during his tenure.
The fall sports season showcased impressive performances, particularly in volleyball and football, the latter of which hosted a playoff game for the first time in three years. The water polo team, now in its second year of UIL pilot participation, also qualified for playoffs, while swimming saw 19 athletes advance to regionals.
The winter sports season was equally successful, with girls basketball clinching the district championship and powerlifting athletes achieving commendable placements at the state meet. Boys and girls soccer both secured district titles, with boys soccer achieving its first championship in a decade.
In track and field, the teams demonstrated strong potential, qualifying numerous athletes for area and regional competitions. Tennis continued its dominance with a 22nd consecutive district championship in team tennis and multiple individual titles in the spring.
Despite strong seasons, both baseball and softball faced tough losses in the playoffs, ending their runs in close matches. The athletic program also emphasized academic success, reporting a 96% passing rate among its 870 student-athletes.
The meeting also addressed community engagement, with over 1,800 hours of service logged by student-athletes in various initiatives. The Midway Athletic Booster Club played a crucial role in supporting these programs, raising nearly $450,000 last year, which contributed to scholarships totaling $30,000 for 34 students.
Looking ahead, the establishment of the Midway Youth Sports Association aims to provide a sustainable framework for youth sports, ensuring continued engagement and development for young athletes in the community. The director expressed pride in the community's support and the positive trajectory of the athletic programs, encouraging greater participation in future events.
