During a recent Cuyahoga County Council meeting, members expressed strong support for a resolution advocating for the continuation of arts funding through a proposed increase in the cigarette tax. This initiative, set to appear on the November ballot, aims to replace the current 1.5¢ tax with a 3.5¢ tax, which is projected to generate approximately $160 million over the next decade.

The discussion highlighted the critical role that the Cuyahoga Arts and Culture (CAC) funding plays in sustaining the region's arts infrastructure. Since its inception in 2006, the funding has significantly bolstered local arts organizations, with a notable renewal of support in 2015, which garnered 75% voter approval. The CAC has distributed over $246 million through more than 4,000 grants, resulting in substantial economic activity and job creation—over 8,600 jobs in 2023 alone.

Council members emphasized the importance of arts in enhancing community life and education. Councilwoman Marks noted the transformative impact of arts programs in Lakewood, while other speakers, including Cindy Einhaus, CEO of the Beck Center for the Arts, underscored the necessity of this funding for operational support, especially in light of declining philanthropic contributions.

Jeremy Johnson, president of Assembly for the Arts, reinforced the message, stating that the arts are integral to the community's identity and economic vitality. He urged council members and the public to advocate for the ballot issue, stressing that failure to pass the tax increase would jeopardize vital arts services and opportunities for local artists.

The council unanimously moved to adopt the resolution, signaling a collective commitment to preserving and enhancing the arts in Cuyahoga County. Public comments further illustrated the community's backing for the initiative, with advocates calling for continued investment in the arts as a means to enrich quality of life and foster economic development.
