In a recent government meeting, city officials outlined a comprehensive five-year plan for utilizing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, which have seen a decrease in allocation due to an increase in entitlement communities. The city anticipates receiving approximately $495,000 for the upcoming fiscal year, down from previous levels, necessitating a focused approach on housing rehabilitation.
The plan sets five primary goals, including providing home repairs for low-income homeowners, clearance and demolition of dilapidated properties, land acquisition for affordable housing, and a commitment to public service through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. The city aims to rehabilitate at least 25 homes, demolish 10 properties, and acquire surplus lots for new housing developments over the next five years.
Public input was gathered through three hearings and surveys, revealing a strong community demand for affordable housing, rental assistance, and improved public infrastructure, such as lighting and sidewalks. However, the limited funding restricts the city’s ability to address all identified needs.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted the approval of a contract for residential rehabilitation services for a moderate-income family, funded through the state housing initiative program. The selected contractor, Building Visions Construction, LLC, will undertake significant repairs to bring the home up to current standards.
City officials emphasized the importance of collaboration with various agencies to tackle homelessness and improve housing stability, while also addressing the challenges posed by funding shortages. The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue exploring innovative solutions to enhance affordable housing opportunities in the community.
