School District Plans Major Park Expansion Amid Community Concerns

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the proposed expansion of the Empire Elementary School campus, aimed at enhancing physical education and recreational space for students. The Carson City School District has reached out to the Parks Department to adjust the lot lines, allowing for a more efficient use of land adjacent to the school.

Parks staff recommended a lot line adjustment based on the topography and existing infrastructure, particularly the irrigation system. This proposal was presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission in April 2024, which subsequently recommended its approval to the Board of Supervisors. The school district will cover all costs associated with the land transfer, while ensuring public access to the area when school is not in session.

Superintendent AJ Fuehling addressed community concerns regarding public access to the newly created park space. He assured attendees that the intent is to maintain a similar access model as seen at Carson Middle School, where the public can use the facilities after school hours and during the summer. Fuehling emphasized the importance of security for students during school hours, which necessitates fencing to create a clear boundary between school activities and public use.

Concerns were raised by several supervisors about the potential locking of gates and the impact on neighborhood access. Fuehling clarified that while some school grounds are locked after hours, the expectation is that the new area will remain open to the public when school is not in session. The resolution includes provisions to ensure this access is enforceable.

The meeting also highlighted the school district's commitment to maintaining the area, which includes plans for improvements such as a soccer field, basketball court, and revitalization of existing facilities.
