During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the approval of a resolution to accept a $1 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant aimed at enhancing water and sewer infrastructure in Erwin, specifically for the Saint Matthews Road Utility Extension Project. The project will involve the installation of an 8-inch waterline on Saint Matthews Road, connecting to a 12-inch line on Red Hill Church Road, which is expected to improve water pressure in the area and support planned future developments.

Mister Ward, who presented the resolution, highlighted that the improvements are crucial for accommodating ongoing and future construction projects, including storage facilities and residential developments. Additionally, sewer upgrades will be made near 421, linking two main lines behind Porter Park.

The meeting also addressed the need for an engineering contract to facilitate the project. Myers Engineering PLLC from Fuquay Varina has been selected for the design work, with a contract valued at approximately $150,000. This step is essential as ARPA guidelines require a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process for engineering consultants. The project timeline is pressing, as bids must be finalized by the end of the year, and funds must be utilized by the end of 2026.

In another discussion, updates were provided regarding the juvenile justice program's relocation. Currently housed off-campus, the program has faced challenges due to storm damage to their existing facility. The owner is working on repairs, and while the lease is nearing its end, officials plan to transition to a month-to-month arrangement. The juvenile justice team is considering a temporary move to another building to avoid disruptions, although their preference remains to stay in their current location for proximity to the courthouse.
