In a recent quarterly report, Ron Jacobison, the 4-H educator, highlighted significant achievements and activities within the program as it approaches the end of its year in June. The program has seen a 6.9% increase in youth enrollment, totaling 6,107 participants, alongside 219 volunteers. The retention rate for members stands at 81%, slightly above the state average of 80%.
Jacobison noted that the top projects in Washington County included archery, art, and photography, with archery leading at 198 participants. A notable achievement was highlighted with 4-H student Holly Ellsinger, who earned a spot on the Wisconsin State shooting team and placed fourth nationally in air pistol.
The report also emphasized the success of the recent 4-H summer camp, which saw a 29% increase in attendance, reaching 104 participants. The camp, designed for students in grades 3 through 8, featured various activities including canoeing, archery, and crafts, supported by 20 teen volunteers.
Looking ahead, Jacobison mentioned ongoing initiatives such as the Camp Superhero program and safety presentations for young children, which include farm safety education. The upcoming county fair is expected to showcase a significant number of 4-H exhibits, with 4-H youth contributing over 4,000 of the 6,211 total exhibits.
Enrollment for the next year will begin on September 1, with an all-club leaders meeting scheduled for August 21. The report reflects a thriving 4-H program that continues to engage youth and foster community involvement through various educational and recreational activities.
