In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a proposed roadway improvement plan for Wilmot Street, aimed at extending the road approximately 60 feet towards Kohana Street. The plan includes the installation of new asphalt, extending existing sewer and water mains, and adding a fire hydrant. The new asphalt will be 20 feet wide and designed to match the existing layout.
John D'Souza from North County Group presented the plan, emphasizing that the improvements are necessary to provide adequate access to a newly created lot. The drainage system will be updated to mitigate runoff, with a new sewer manhole and an infiltration area to manage stormwater. D'Souza confirmed that the plan has been revised to address previous concerns raised by the Department of Public Works (DPW) and has received preliminary approval from the city engineer.
During the public input session, residents expressed concerns about the potential environmental impact of the project, particularly regarding the removal of wooded areas and the management of stormwater. Maureen Boris, a long-time resident, voiced her apprehension about the changes and the lack of clear communication regarding the project’s implications for the neighborhood.
Other residents raised questions about the safety of the proposed layout, particularly regarding visibility for drivers exiting their properties. Concerns were also raised about the absence of sidewalks and street lighting in the area.
Despite the concerns, the planning board members generally supported the project, noting that it represents an improvement over previous proposals. The board ultimately voted to approve the roadway improvement plan, contingent upon meeting the requirements set forth by the city engineer.
In a separate agenda item, the board reviewed a site plan for an auto sales business at 94 Fremont Street, which aims to complement an existing auto repair shop. The proposal includes paving the parking area and delineating spaces for customer and employee parking. The board noted that the business has been well-received in the community, with improvements already made to the site.
The meeting concluded with a motion to approve the site plan, which included conditions to ensure that the business maintains a clean and orderly appearance, and to address concerns about the visibility of vehicles for sale. The board emphasized the importance of maintaining neighborhood character while allowing for business development.
